From Shirts to Bags

I'm still sewing bags and will probably continue on for awhile. I went to the fabric store and purchased a whole bolt of twill tape. I have recently fallen in love with twill tape.

I remember when our son wore these shirts in high school and college. They were sitting in a box with his things in the basement storage. He let me have them and that excited me.

I've been in the sewing mood lately. I recently got back into sewing and have started walking up and down the aisles in the fabric stores. It brings back so many memories of the times I used to sit flipping through the pattern books when the kids were babies. I am having a ball rediscovering so many things I had forgotten but it all comes back, like relearning how to ride a bike.

A tutorial for making these bags can be found here.

I recently saw the idea of recycling shirt cuffs into little pouches on Pinterest here and here.

I found my shirt cuffs to be too thick to sew them closed, so I ripped the seam on the inner side (the left side in the photo) and removed two layers of fabric in the seam. I used an edging stitch on my machine and then sewed 1/4 inch in from the edge. I think it's a pretty cool thing to do. There are such clever people in this world and thanks to Pinterest we can enjoy their ideas.

I also want to make little teddy bears for my grandson to be out of the remnants of these shirts. Since these shirts coordinate so well, I thought it would be fun to mix and match the fabrics on the bears. The ears would be one of the fabrics, the face another...I will show them to you someday! First, though, I need to make some sock monkeys!

  1. Great idea! I really like those bags. I have a feeling I'll be making some of those too. I always save the buttons from my husband's old shirts. Sometimes I keep the shirts because the fabric is so nice. But, they just sit there waiting for inspiration. Now I have it! Thank you! :-)

  2. Another fabulous idea, Patty! In fact, my youngest daughter is looking over my shoulder and wants me to make her a bag like that for her gym clothes! Have a wonderful weekend!

  3. This is such a cute idea, Patty! I keep a box of clothing to upcycle & this would be perfect for a couple of the shirts. I even have a couple of pairs of badly worn but "oh so soft" jeans. I think a patchwork quilt would be really fun to make using some of these pieces. I also make lots of Teddy Bears, and love doing them in a patchwork style. Bears are super-cute made out of old jeans, too!

  4. Love the idea of using the shirts for your bags -- and the cuff idea is wonderful! Making a teddy bear for your grandson using his dad's (I assume) shirts will be so special! Hope you don't have to wait too long to do it!!

  6. And they can be used for so many things.
Years ago I made up several cosmetic/jewelry bags for a craft sale. I have not sewn in years. Daughter borrowed my machine sev eral years ago and have not see it since. :-D
Hope you are enjoying the weekend.
