Have You Been to Lake Wawasee?

My friend Rose and I took a drive up to Lake Wawasee in Northern Indiana and spent a couple nights there. Since it was after Labor Day, there was less traffic thus making it even a more relaxing place to be. Lake Wawasee is the largest natural lake in Indiana and is 6 square miles in size.

We stayed at the Oakwood Resort, right on the lake.

The Sunday evening we arrived, we were lucky enough to enjoy the last boat ride of the season. There was a cool breeze on the hour long boat ride and one of my favorite memories of being there was snuggling up afterwards and keeping warm under the covers in my king sized bed. Rose and I did our own thing, watching tv and playing with our electronics.

Shots from around the Oakwood Resort.

The next day, we ventured to Winona Lake. There you see adirondack chairs, bicycles and small bungalows.

There is a canal with shops lining the way along Canal Street.

Canal on Canal Street

I really enjoyed these shops and found some fun and useful items.

A few of the lovely shops on Canal Street

SACS & CO. has a wonderful selection of soaps, lotions and candles. Everything is made by hand at the shop. They offer private soap-making classes upon request. I sampled the Milk & Honey Milk Bath and my skin felt silky smooth afterwards.

The bead shop, called Canal Street Gallery & Beads, also offers classes. I was told that there are only 4 bead shops left in Indiana which makes me sad. Since this is only a few hours from my home, I will be back to take some classes.

I purchased these lovely earrings. I was drawn to them not only for their seed-bead beauty, but because they are the colors of my November birthstone, topaz.

The soda and candy shop, Rocket Fizz, is a franchise. I have never seen so much soda and candy in one place! There are 370 different kinds of sodas and rooms filled with all kinds of sweet things.

Someone please tell me the name of my little green friend. We instantly bonded, but I don't know who she is!

Rose's boss, who has ties to the area, recommended that we have dinner at The Channel Marker in Syracuse. The shrimp scampi was indeed delicious!

This was a nostalgic trip for Rose, as she had lived in this area many years ago, when she was first married. One of the places she wanted to visit was Zale Drugs which was closeby, in Warsaw, Indiana. At first I thought, OK, what's so neat about a drug store?

But then I saw the luncheonette food bar in the back! If you are ever in northern Indiana, I recommend visiting Zale Drugs for the experience of enjoying an old fashioned root beer float!

While you're there, you can get your flu shot and pick up a nostalgic free 2016 calendar.

Another place she wanted to visit was Gropp's Famous Fish of Stroh, located in Fort Wayne. We stopped there for lunch on our way home. She raved about their fish sandwich.

The fish sandwich and cole slaw were delicious! It was also great fun to see the vintage lake house decor...

especially in the bathroom!

I enjoyed Rose's trip down memory lane with her. It was a great "girls" getaway. I had never been to Lake Wawasee before, yet had heard people speak fondly of it. Now I know why it is such a popular Indiana attraction!

  6. Well, that was fun, wasn't it? I know what you mean though. There are so many beautiful places just a little time away form us and it's up to us to go visit. I've always loved lakes and lake resorts, and therefore love the lake resort memorabilia at that one restaurant. And that candy store! 370 different kinds of soda? Is that even possible...lol. Bet you were tempted to smuggle a few of those beautiful Adirondack chairs back home with you. :D
