After Ashleigh recently chalk painted our old nightstands, I got to thinking about how we had several of our pieces of furniture refurbished when we moved into our home almost seven years ago. I thought it would be interesting to show you the comparison of what we did to salvage other old pieces we loved so much. Maybe it will provide inspiration for you.
Ash did a good job and was tired afterwards! They look great in her bedroom.
When we moved into our current home, our basement storage area was full of pieces that didn't go with the new decor. For example, we decided to have this red chair reupholstered with the brown fabric so it could be moved to any room in our home, wherever it is needed. It's such a comfortable chair.
This little chair was my grandmother's and when she died, my aunt gave it to me. It was broken in several areas (you can see the places along the curved edges in the left photo). The seat was rotten too. We had it refinished and reupholstered. Since it is a very fragile piece, it sits in an out of the way place so it won't be sat upon. I look at it as a piece of art.
We purchased this old china cabinet when we were first married. Dan painstakingly stripped the paint off of it. We hauled it from Indianapolis to Pittsburgh to Cincinnati to Louisiana to California and back to Indiana. My decorator suggested we spend $1200 on a black buffet type cabinet for the great room. Since we loved this piece so much, we decided to have it painted black so we could enjoy it in the space that needed something to tie the room together. Dan cringed at the thought but was really good about having it done.
Dan loved this chair so much that we had 3 of them in our former house! Two were in the great room and one was up in the master bedroom. We thought, Why purchase new chairs when the ones we have are so good? So we reupholstered all three of them. This time only one sits in the great room and the other two provide seating in the master bedroom (see two pictures below).
The marble top on the old English sideboard table just didn't go with the bedroom, so we had the furniture refinisher replace it with a piece of wood. Also, we had two of these round ottomans, one like the middle photo below and one in the fabric like the chair on the left. We had both covered in the same velveteen brown fabric that covers the headboard in our master bedroom.
This secretary desk was in desperate need to be refinished. We finally had it done and it looks so nice now.
Blue didn't go with anything in our current home so this chair was reupholstered too.
I'm so glad we could bring new life to these pieces and continue to enjoy them. We saved a lot of money this way too!
Definitely inspiring. I love what you did with your Grandmother's old chair. BEAUTIFUL!!!
ReplyDeleteGood morning Patty. I am sitting out here on the deck at the cabin, listening to the boats zoom by, looking at blogs with my ipad, when I was reading your post though, I had to inside, and trade the ipad in for my laptop to get a much better view of your beautiful pieces of furniture!!! I am a firm believer in redoing old, as it is often times, far better made!!! Plus, I admire the pieces that were made years past anyway. I love, love, love, each and every piece you have redone. Ash will get may years of use out of those two new to her, pieces for her bedroom. The chalk paint redo was fabulous! I had my living room furniture reupholstered a few years back. It was high quality furniture, and much better to redo than to buy new. Your pieces are lovely!!!!

Everything looks great redone. But, they only thing I could focus on was that you have 2 chairs in your master bedroom. We gave up a lot when we downsized, but I would be happy if there was space for a chair.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the beautiful redos.
Those are some really nice redos. She did a great job on the tables.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. Hope you are enjoying the weekend.
I really like the idea of using what you already have and giving it new life with a face lift. I treasure the pieces that belonged to my grandmother...your chair is so sweet. Your buffet is stunning and I love it painted black. Thanks for sharing:-)
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely recover/repaint of your furniture. Enjoyed seeing the before and then the afters in their new places in your home. A visual treat.

Great "upgrades" on your furniture. I like it when people take care of family pieces. It makes a home more unique and special.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty pieces, and it would have been a pity to have gotten rid of them.
I love how you didn't just get rid of what didn't fit, but found a way to change them up and re-use them. Your grandmother's chair is a true piece of art, for sure! I have a chair that was my grandmother's. Years ago my uncle had the woven seats redone, but it has gotten weak. I need to have something done with that so we can make use of it again.
ReplyDeleteHi Patty,
ReplyDeleteWonderful transformations! Your hutch looks amazing as well as the reupholstered chairs.
I love all of your transformations. The black piece and the nightstands especially!
ReplyDeleteI love all the ways you made old pieces new again! Love the china cabinet...and the arm chairs are a great transformation!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog today!
