Passport to Pleasure: McCordsville & Greenfield Indiana

Dan is very supportive of my Passport to Pleasure endeavor (you can read more about it here). Quite often he asks me if I want to explore more shops in the Indiana Antique Guide. So today we went to McCordsville & Greenfield. I can put Washi tape in the book for McCordsville Mercantile & J.W. Riley's Emporium. Both shops had loads of antiques to browse through.

Here is McCordsville Mercantile. It's funny that this place is not too far from me. If I hadn't been going through the Indiana Antique Guide, I wouldn't have known it was there. That would be a sad thing because this is a great shop!

The first thing I saw as I was going up the steps was this rooster tray. I told Dan that I love the patina on it. He said, "Honey, it's rust." I immediately envisioned it on top of our kitchen cabinet.

Like so...isn't the patina great!

Here are some scenes from inside the shop.

Another metal doll house!! And isn't the horse sweet!

Look at the rooster on the chimney - so cute!

I remember my Mother having one of these roasters, but I didn't know they had matching cabinets. I imagine the ladies must have appreciated the storage underneath.

Here is what I took home with me: a jar with lid; doll furniture - I'm not sure for what kind of doll but it is in great shape; I'm not sure if the round tin on the upper right was used for jello but in the shop it held a candle and I thought that was a great idea; a round brass fruit plate to hang on the wall - it's huge at 16 inches in circumference (I may paint it a vanilla color but I'm going to live with it for awhile before I decide; bottle caps and of course the rooster tray.

Here it is the tin with a candle in it. Ingenious, right?!

Here's a close up of the bottle caps. Somehow I will incorporate them into my art.

Here is the brass plate hanging in the kitchen. I have lived in this house for almost 8 years and finally found something to put on this wall. I may hang something above it too.

Then we visited J.W. Riley's Emporium in Greenfield. This shop really takes a day to go through by itself because there is so much to see! I ran out of steam pretty soon into my exploration of it.

 This is nice to know!

I will definitely return soon. But I did manage to take home a few treasures: a long vintage table runner (I am going to make something with it and I'll surprise you in another post); a vintage hymnal - I've been looking for one for awhile - you never know what you will find (it's so exciting, isn't it!?); two baby bunny rattles in pink and aqua; and buttons - of course!

I found some interesting buttons.

I'm not sure what this is but I think it can be used in my art somehow.

It was a fun day with Dan! I wonder where we'll go next!

  1. Patty,
What a great trip and I love the rooster tray with all the lovely patina. It looks so perfect in your kitchen. Great score on that. I love that church pew in the one picture. I want a church pew like that someday. Looks like that shop had some wonderful treasures.

  2. Patty- You found some really fun things. It is always fun to dig around in those places to see what you can find, isn't it? My Aunt had one of those old roasters on the stand. They had a big family so she used it a lot. It will be fun to see how you use some of those things- xo Diana

  5. Patty, I had to laugh at your husband...when he said it was rusty, he didn't know he was saying the magic word. LOL. It looks great where you have it in your kitchen. Love all your sweet treasures. Patty, I do not know if this shop would be in the travel book...but there's a place in Elwood, right on hwy 28, on the west of town. It's called main street treasures. You would love it. So maybe one day Dan would take you there. xoxo,Susie

  8. Steve can hardly handle it when we go for a drive and I want to stop at the antique store that carries Annie Sloan.

I am thinking that you won't find any steals at the shops on Abbot Kinney, but you also won't have much space in your luggage.

I told Steve this morning that next Wednesday was my day and I was going to Manhattan Beach to meet a stranger.

  10. Love everything you bought Patty. You have a great eye for picking out the treasures. What type of prices were the items?
